“Real power comes from the floor,” coach Garth Taylor explained to the noon jiu jitsu class as he pulled a tight and powerful cross face. “You’ve got to make your connection to the floor through your knees and toes. That’s where power comes from.” To pull a powerful cross face as Garth explained, start by gripping your partner’s armpit (pictured below), then pull your elbow into your ribs and drive your knees and toes into the floor. That connection will supply wonderful pushing pressure which, when combined with the pulling force from your arm, will bring you that much closer to disconnecting your partner's head from their shoulders.
