Seminar with Grand Master Francisco Mansur Thursday, December 3rd

This Thursday Grand Master Francisco Mansur will be teaching a special seminar at Kaijin / West Cliff Jiu Jitsu Club. Francisco Mansur is one of Helio Gracie’s  original students and has spent nearly 50 years devoted to the gentle art. He has earned the highest possible rank – 9th degree Red Belt (the 10th degree has been reserved for the founders of the art – all of whom have since passed away). Additionally, Grand Master Mansur is part of our lineage here at WCJJC in that he is Claudio Franca’s instructor and Claudio is who showed us the path of Jiu Jitsu making Francisco Mansur our Jiu Jitsu Grandfather of sorts. In addition to being an incredibly inspirational, passionate and technical instructor, he is perhaps the most charismatic person you will ever meet. It is impossible to forget  his remarkable stories and observations. Just the question and answer portion will be worth the cost of admission. Please join us for what promises to be a truly inspirational Jiu Jitsu Seminar. Everyone is welcome.

Congratulations US Open competitors!!!

Kaijin / West Cliff Jiu Jitsu Club had a great showing over the weekend at the US Open. We are extraordinarily happy with the performance and more importantly the attitude and spirit demonstrated by everyone who competed. It really reminded me how happy I am to be involved with the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Self Defense – the foundation of Jiu Jitsu

Self Defense is often taught to beginners as an introduction to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – and for good reason. Self defense is the core of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and is the best method to teach the body mechanics, leverage, strategy and sensitivity that define the art. It gives students confidence in their ability to defend themselves effectively as well as an understanding of the rationale behind Jiu Jitsu strategy – safety first, followed by positional control that leads to submission. The simplest and best definition of Jiu Jitsu I have heard comes from John Danaher who defines Jiu Jitsu as simply “control that leads to submission”. As such, Jiu Jitsu is more than a sport – it is a Martial Art in the truest sense. Additionally self defense builds the base that will support the larger structure of our Jiu Jitsu practice – should we pursue Jiu Jitsu as a way of life, a hobby, compete in Jiu Jitsu sport, or choose to enter the ring or cage of Mixed Martial Arts.

Here is an excellent video of Jiu Jitsu self defense as demonstrated by Rickson and Royler Gracie.
