Kids Martial Arts Classes
This is our inaugral post for the kids section. It will work exactly like the main page (discussing training, the technique of the class, photos, etc.) except it’s just for the kids class. Parents of current students, and I am one of you, you can see exactly what Garth and Paul covered with the kids, ask questions, make comments, etc. Parents of prospective students, take a look, pose questions to the instructors or other parents. See what we are all about.
Now for the technique.
Side mount escape. This is something that everyone struggles with, from six year old to experienced black belt. Better to start practicing this now. First, you are in side mount. What now?

When you’re on the bottom, stay safe. Keep your elbows close to your body and put your hands on your opponent’s hip and shoulder to make a little room.

Next use your top leg to make a little more room between your and your opponent by putting your shin on your opponent’s arm. Now you you can slide your bottom leg between you and your opponent and recompose guard. Your are in a much safer position now. I didn’t get a good photo of this last movement but will next time.
Here’s Garth Taylor explaining to the kids how to pay attention and why it is important to learn the technique. He does this with the adults, too.

The class is growing! The really big kid on the left of Garth is our assistant instructor, Jay.

Here’s a shameless plug for my daughter, Isabella. She took gold at the last Jiu Jitsu by the Sea competition, winning both of her matches by submission in less than a minute each. I wish my Jiu Jitsu were as good as hers. She represented Kaijin well. Parents, competition is fun for the kids and really helps build their self-confidence.
This is her second match. She is in the blue gi. Her opponent is a boy and a good competitor.
