Marcelo Garcia is now offering a ground breaking online training program. The product is really incredible, the depth of instruction and inclusion of training footage make this the most potent training supplement I have come across. As a special deal for Kaijin Martial Arts / West Cliff Jiu Jitsu Club students, if you sign up for one year in advance (or after 12 months of monthly payment) you get a week of free training at Marcelo’s New York Academy (believe me, it is AWESOME). To get this deal enter the promo code WCJJC

Watch Marcelo evolve his cutting edge arsenal, while he teaches and rolls every night. Each lesson and sparring session is broken down into multiple sub-themes, all interconnected in a growing database, allowing for navigation back and forth between theory and practice.

This revolutionary online BJJ and Submission Grappling training program is designed by 8-time National Chess Champion, 2-time Tai Chi Push Hands World Champion, BJJ brown belt, and author of The Art of Learning, Josh Waitzkin.

The vast majority of great grapplers talk about the parallels between BJJ and chess–now you can combine full access to the laboratory of the greatest grappler on the planet with the no-nonsense tools of elite chess training for just $25/month!

You can cruise around and watch some videos for free before signing up, so check it out—there is already a ton of incredible footage up, and new material will be uploaded nightly.

For more information, check out this recent interview with Marcelo Garcia and Josh Waitzkin http://www.onthemat.com/articles/Fusing_The_Body__Mind_Marcelo_Garcia__Josh_Waitzkin_12_16_2009.html

This Thursday Grand Master Francisco Mansur will be teaching a special seminar at Kaijin / West Cliff Jiu Jitsu Club. Francisco Mansur is one of Helio Gracie’s original students and has spent nearly 50 years devoted to the gentle art. He has earned the highest possible rank – 9th degree Red Belt (the 10th degree has been reserved for the founders of the art – all of whom have since passed away). Additionally, Grand Master Mansur is part of our lineage here at WCJJC in that he is Claudio Franca’s instructor and Claudio is who showed us the path of Jiu Jitsu making Francisco Mansur our Jiu Jitsu Grandfather of sorts. In addition to being an incredibly inspirational, passionate and technical instructor, he is perhaps the most charismatic person you will ever meet. It is impossible to forget his remarkable stories and observations. Just the question and answer portion will be worth the cost of admission. Please join us for what promises to be a truly inspirational Jiu Jitsu Seminar. Everyone is welcome.

Self Defense is often taught to beginners as an introduction to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – and for good reason. Self defense is the core of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and is the best method to teach the body mechanics, leverage, strategy and sensitivity that define the art. It gives students confidence in their ability to defend themselves effectively as well as an understanding of the rationale behind Jiu Jitsu strategy – safety first, followed by positional control that leads to submission. The simplest and best definition of Jiu Jitsu I have heard comes from John Danaher who defines Jiu Jitsu as simply “control that leads to submission”. As such, Jiu Jitsu is more than a sport – it is a Martial Art in the truest sense. Additionally self defense builds the base that will support the larger structure of our Jiu Jitsu practice – should we pursue Jiu Jitsu as a way of life, a hobby, compete in Jiu Jitsu sport, or choose to enter the ring or cage of Mixed Martial Arts.

Here is an excellent video of Jiu Jitsu self defense as demonstrated by Rickson and Royler Gracie.
