ADCC trials

Well ADCC trials are in the books – I took second, losing 0 x 0 in the final to a very tough Don Ortega. To make the final I won my first two matches by points and the third I finished by triangle. The first match could have ended very differently though as I locked up the triangle and my opponent lifted me over his head, I realized at the last second that slams to escape submission are legal in ADCC and quickly released the triangle. I was happy to have escaped the knock out and continued to attack with the omoplata. For his part, Ryan won, finishing all his opponents (triangle, 50/50  heelhook, armlock, 50/50 heelhook). Below is what Ryan submitted for our blog.

I want to extend a huge “thank you” to Paul and Garth for having me out to Santa Cruz to train for the week prior to the ADCC Trials.  Getting the opportunity to work with and learn from them again was an awesome experience that I feel made a really positive impact on my result at the Trials.  Kaijin has some tough training and a great atmosphere that’s both geared towards improving the students and welcoming to visiting competitors.

Paul and I bounced around for a few days prior to the tournament, getting some work in with Dave Camarillo, Jon Fitch, and Josh Koschek at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, then stopping at the Gracie Academy in Torrance the day before the Trials to lose some weight and pick up some tips from Ryron Gracie.  Dave and Ryron were particularly gracious and took a lot of time to help me out and sharpen up some problem areas in my game.  Overall, I had a great time and I can’t wait to get back out to Santa Cruz to do it again before the ADCC main event in September.
