One of My Favorite Half Guard Passes
This is a pass Paul taught that I’ve had much success with. This pass works great because it will work against anybody no matter what the size difference.
The first step is to be sure you secure an under hook on the same side that your leg is being controlled. It is important to maintain a high under hook by grabbing the shoulder, if your under hook is too low it will be easier for your opponent to swim under.
Second you need to hug the opposite arm with an over hook and get your hip as close to the ground as possible pinning your opponents leg to the floor. The stronger your opponent is the more important it is that you pin his/her hip to the floor to minimize their movement. Your upper body should be pinning his/her arm, ie. your chest should be on your opponents bicep.
Third you need to place your heel on your opponents knee and push while you slide your trapped leg free. It is my experience that this is a crucial period in this move, some of my training partners have waited for this moment to explode and try to sweep me. If you keep your hips from raising your opponents effort will be a waste of energy.
Besides being a great pass this will put you in a perfect position for my favorite armbar set up.

Nice pass! My favorite – I learned it from Marcelinho in 2006 and have been working to master it ever since.
